Interesting week. I have been listening to a few workshops by @art2life_world. They are about art principals.
I have had a few experiments on the go lately with little satisfaction, so I looked at them again with a different approach. Still intuitive, but referencing some ideas about design and values.

The first two sets are about taking a collection of ideas and distilling the stories. I like to play first and find the truth later. They are still #wip. The last is a quick pic of my process...trying to seek the best bits.

So much for having full day of painting. I worked on everything but had to stop eventually as nothing was drying. Slightly nightmarish as paint below certain temps does not do what it says on the box.

Some frenetic inspiration for tomorrow's planned studio day. Spent an hour getting some outlines and ideas together. Fast and furiously backgrounds to make sure I'm not faced with the trepidation of blank canvas. The hound chose a comfortable perch and promptly fell asleep.

Having commented to a fellow creative that concertina sketchbooks are slightly too long to inspire totally freedom, she kindly made me a perfectly sized version. It is about 150cm long and only a single layer of paper.
It meant that I could fling some left over colour at it, without feeling intimidated by it.
I sent her a photo today of my rather frivolous abuse of it, and she promptly said 'Hmm..Valentine's colours'

So in line with developing a few evocative names for my palette, I bring you today's two new ones

Working towards putting a few ideas together. Limited palette. Abstraction. Florals.

Colours are a little inspired by the cover of @livingetcuk magazine and my personal fascination with strange coral colours.

True story... once upon a time I studied textile design and a fellow student and I delighted in making up names for colours. This range we tended to call 'dead salmon' 'peach melba' and 'mellorine'. In the eighties they were also slightly unfavourably known as shades of terracotta. I see that they are currently called #livingcoral (pantone2019) #redearth #orangeaurora #keralanturmeric #mughalpalace #terracottawarrior

I decided its time to make some colours notes. This week I will be mixing and using

Yesterday was awesome. Also very thought provoking. Warning..long story alert.
Until last year, my art has been strictly for quiet times and 'days off' . In my other world I own and run and bakery, cafe and gallery business. A year ago, the gallery was put on hold due to Covid, and for the few months we were able to open, I filled space with my own work. I sold a number of pieces which was very encouraging. I have had a mixed year, however catching up with my artist inside has been the greatest gift.
I have a beautiful studio at home, but it has limited space. So I have decided to try painting on a different scale and more experimentally, and unused space in the gallery has now become filled with the results. It is only about 5⁰C, so heater required and thermals.

I painted fast and furiously all day. I used colours which are courageous/ridiculous. And when I looked at the results today, I felt really excited about the future.

As I painted I called the colours egg, bacon and toast. I worked in a concertina book, and later a friend remarked that it felt as if the landscape changed from urban to rural, industrial to seascape, across the pages. The result is now officially called BREAKFAST IN EVERY VILLAGE.

I ended the day seeing if I could translate the ideas to a bigger piece....Still WIP. I learned a few things.

1. Limited palette: its okay to choose weird colours.
2. No preconceived outcome means the end will be a surprise and nothing is too awful.
3. Play days make me pack the fear away. Thank you @isleofskyeartstudio
